  • Starbases

    Starbases are often the hubs of activity within their assigned sectors. They act as:

    * Trading posts and way stations for civilian transports
    * Military garrison facilities, coordinating military starship operations and support
    * Diplomatic, governmental, medical and legal services for both military and civilian personnel
    * Scientific and Medical research centers

    In many ways starbases are analogous to the forts, fortresses, and castles used on Earth during various period of its history.

  • Torpedos

    Photon Torpedoes:

    Matter/antimatter annihilation weapon used by Starfleet that contains deuterium and magnetically constrained antideuterium tanks which are simultaneously released at the point of detonation, mutually annihilating each other and producing a high-energy explosion. These devices are present on almost all Federation starships and are quite well known in terms of their capabilities.

    Quantum Torpedoes:

    A torpedo device that uses a traditional 21.8 isoton matter/antimatter reaction to jump-start an energetic local release of a zero point energy field, which is more effective at penetrating deflector shields with a theoretical maximum yield of 52.3 isotons. Unlike the photon torpedo, quantums are manufactured at a lower-number of hidden facilities within the Federation. Because of the nature of various exotic materials, many of the components cannot be replicated and thus cannot be manufactured locally aboard starships. Vessels handling quantum torpedoes must observe special handling and loading precautions, including antigravs, tele-robotic servicing and protective buffer fields.

    Tricobalt Torpedoes:

    Unlike photon and quantum torpedoes whose explosive potential is measured in isotons, the tricobalt torpedoes are calibrated to a yield of 20,000 terracochranes (cochranes are the unit used to measure subspace field stress, such as in warp fields). As such, using tricobalt devices distorts space around an object by causing subspace instability, and that fields around 20,000 teracochranes can actually tear the fabric between normal space and subspace for short periods of time. Therefore, their use is limited to military-use only, due to the potential dangers from the device.

    Transphasic Torpedoes:

    These weapons, when collaborated to shift phases randomly, can easily destroy a Borg Cube with just one direct hit. Transphasic torpedoes are out of phased, effectively allowing the torpedo to pass through a ship’s shields with little to no resistance.

  • Shields

    Deflector Shields:

    The deflector shields (or more commonly referred to simply as shields) are an electromagnetic force field that can be projected around a starship, starbase, or planet by technological means and act as the first form of defense against enemies or natural hazards, using deflection to protect said body from various forms of radiation and matter collisions.

    Multiphasic shields were an advanced type of deflector shield technology, used by the Federation in the 24th century, capable of protecting a vessel from subspace radiation and the dangerous energy emissions generated by stars.

    Transphasic Shields:

    Although there are many different types of shielding, transphasic shields were developed from the technology behind transphasic torpedoes and backward engineered until it finally worked. It was the breakthrough from looking at both transphasic torpedoes and multiphasic shields that lead to Starfleet's ability to use the Slipstream technology.

    The difference between multiphasic shields and transphasic shields is rather simple, in that multiphasic shields only shuffle through a pre-determined list of phases, whereas transphasic shields shuffle through a random, unknown even to those operating it, amount of phases. These shields work perfectly because they are just that random, and there has yet to have been a proper weapon developed that can completely bypass them.

    Because they not only protect from the radiation and the phase variations can match the slipstream, the transphasic shields make the perfect shielding to use around ships with a slipstream drive, or simply those ships operating around such ships, along with providing shielding around the drives themselves. As such, it is standard operating procedure for all Federation ships within the Delta Quadrant to use and operate with transphasic shielding.

    Currently, transphasic shielding technology is limited from the size of a shuttlecraft to the size of a starbase. Personal shielding was attempted back in the Alpha Quadrant, but no successful results have been determined. As of now, shuttlecraft are the smallest transphasic shielding can be installed on.

  • Propulsion Systems

    Impulse Propulsion:

    The impulse drive is the method of propulsion that spacecraft use when they are traveling below the speed of light. Typically powered by deuterium fusion reactors, impulse engines let ships travel interplanetary distances readily. Unlike the warp engines, impulse engines throw mass out the back as fast as possible to drive you forward.

    Warp Propulsion:

    Warp drive is a technology that allows space travel at faster-than-light speeds. It works by generating warp fields to form a subspace bubble that envelops the spacecraft, distorting the local spacetime continuum and moving the spacecraft at velocities that greatly exceed the speed of light. These velocities are referred to as warp factors. Warp drive is the most common form of interstellar propulsion used in the Milky Way Galaxy, making interstellar exploration, commerce, and warfare possible.

    Slipstream Propulsion:

    The quantum slipstream drive was an advanced form of propulsion technology first encountered by the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, which had the capability of exceeding a starship's maximum warp factor by an unprecedented degree. Similar in principle to the transwarp technology utilized by the Borg, it was originally developed by a Delta Quadrant race designated by the Borg as Species 116.

    The Quantum slipstream drive operates by routing energy through the vessel's main deflector, which then focused a quantum field, allowing the vessel to penetrate the quantum barrier. In order to maintain the slipstream, the phase variance of the quantum field had to be constantly adjusted, or the slipstream would collapse, violently throwing the ship back into normal space.

    The Voyager crew first encountered slipstream technology in 2374, when they discovered the USS Dauntless, a vessel ostensibly sent by Starfleet to transport them back to the Alpha Quadrant. It was subsequently discovered, however, that the vessel was an elaborate ruse by an alien named Arturis, who was seeking revenge on Captain Janeway for what he saw as her complicity in the assimilation of his species by the Borg. Planning to use the Dauntless to transport the Voyager crew back to his Borg-conquered homeworld for assimilation, Arturis settled for Janeway and Seven of Nine when his plot was discovered. Arturis was pursued in the slipstream by Voyager, which had been outfitted with the same technology. Lieutenant Commander Tuvok managed to breach the Dauntless' shields with a photon torpedo, allowing them to rescue Janeway and Seven. Commander Chakotay subsequently ordered their slipstream altered in order to avoid Borg space, leaving Arturis to be assimilated. Voyager remained in the slipstream for an hour before it collapsed, traversing three hundred light years, although their diagnostics concluded that they could not risk using the technology again.

    The next year, the Voyager crew constructed their own quantum slipstream drive using benamite crystals, overcoming some difficulties in their first attempt. Despite promising potential results, Tom Paris discovered a phase variance in the slipstream threshold, threatening to overload the drive's quantum matrix and destroy the ship. Harry Kim realized that the smaller size of a piloted shuttle leading Voyager could allow early phase variance detection of the complex, dynamic slipstream threshold for the larger ship. These advance data and corrections would help Voyager safely navigate the quantum slipstream. During the test flight, with Chakotay piloting the Delta Flyer, Kim sent wrong correction values to Voyager, causing the slipstream to unexpectedly collapse ten light years near the Alpha Quadrant. Voyager crashed on an class L planet in the Takara sector, killing all hands . however, ahead of Voyager in the stable Delta Flyer slipstream, Kim and Chakotay survived the disastrous test and returned to Earth, filled with guilt.

    Fifteen years later, the pair acquired a stolen Borg temporal transmitter and recovered The Doctor's program from Voyager's debris, and attempted to change history by allowing Voyager to stay in the slipstream. With The Doctor's expertise of Seven of Nine's physiology, Kim and Chakotay used the Borg technology to transmit a time index and new phase corrections back in time to Seven of Nine's interplexing beacon. The initial corrections did not work and, with no chance to correct their mistake, The Doctor convinced Kim to give up on the Alpha Quadrant and at least avert the disaster by transmitting information which would end the flight rather than prolong it. As Seven implemented these new corrections, the slipstream dispersed and returned Voyager safely to normal space, eliminating approximately ten years from their journey to the Alpha Quadrant.

    The Think Tank requested quantum slipstream technology as part of the payment for solving the "Hazari paradox". Captain Janeway warned Kurros that they never managed to get the technology to work reliably. Kurros commented that it was still intriguing, theoretically.

    Fifty years later, the Federation has worked with and is currently using the Slipstream technology. With this technology, they have been able to develop and send Starbase 900 to the Delta Quadrant, to begin a new peaceful mission within the Delta Quadrant.

  • Starbase 900

    Starbase 900 is under the charge of Admiral Neil Clayton. The mission of all Starfleet personal under Admiral Clayton's command is as follows:

    a) Set up a base in the Delta Quadrant.

    b) Represent the Federation's interests within the Delta Quadrant (e.g. trade, diplomacy, research, etc).

    Starbase 900 is split in three parts around the planet Tast, an M-class planet on the edge of the Delta Quadrant.

    The main part of the Starbase is above the planet set in a steady orbit. This is the main part of the Starbase and is where visitors and most of the crew stay.

    Starbase 900 - Stationary

    Starbase 900 is the first of its kind to be built. It was built using top-of-the-line materials and financed, as it were, by Starfleet with some help from both the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire.

    For the purposes of greeting new civilizations in the Delta Quadrant, the three main powers within the Alpha Quadrant decided to pool their combined resources in order to better represent all of the races within the quadrant.

    Starbase 900

    When Starbase 900 is in transit, its Pylon decks (Upper and Lower) are rotated outward, in order to provide stronger, more powerful, warp capabilities and -- when it is safe to do so -- enable the slipstream drive.

    Due in part of it still being new, and closed for military-use only, technology, the Federation is currently the only super power with permanent access to the Slipstream technology. However, due in part with agreeing to share the technology (once the Federation has fully tested it and deemed it completely safe), the Romulan Star Empire agreed to allow the Federation permanent and immediate rights to build and use cloaking technology, both in the Alpha Quadrant and other quadrants.

    For the Klingon Empires part, the agreement to share it with them was a relatively simple and easy process, with the empire requesting to be allowed to explore and be on the front-end security teams when exploring unknown and possibly-dangerous terrain -- providing the warrior race something it dearly lacked, new experiences and new fights, along with chances for new honor.

    The second part of the Starbase exists on constantly in-motion platforms floating above the planet's surface. These platforms are where Federation vessels can land for repairs and refueling as required.

    Starbase 900 Platforms

    The platforms themselves were made from previously-experimental Starfleet technology, which would, if successful, have allowed starbases, planets, ships, and whole civilizations live off the energy from the sun -- marketing solar energy to the extreme. It would have provided completely limitless energy.

    Unfortunately for Starfleet, this failed spectacularly and nearly destroyed a solar system as well. Still though, the experiment was a partial success, allowing for the planetary platforms now in use at the planet Tast.

    These platforms, instead of collecting energy from the sun, collect and recycle the energy from the planet and the starbase proper, moving the energy seamlessly back and forth, providing a symbolic relationship between the planet and Starbase 900, presenting the Starbase, the platforms, and the surface units with near-limitless energy.

    The final section of the Starbase is on the planet surface. This part of the Starbase is off limits and only accessible to certain Federation crew members with the proper authorization and clearance level.

  • Herald Class

    USS Harbinger

    The USS Harbinger is the flag ship of the new Herald class, which is the first (and currently only) ships using a smaller, more compact (but still powerful), version of the slipstream drive.

    The main purpose of the Herald class ships is to bring Alpha Quadrant citizens back and forth between the Alpha Quadrant and Delta Quadrants, although they also serve as protection for the planet and Starbase 900 as well.

    Of course, now that Starfleet engineers can, finally, freely use cloaking technology, they have gotten rather happy with it and are using the technology on multiple ship types throughout the federation.

    The Penniless Class ship is meant to be a fast, powerful, ship that is used by Starfleet to allow merchants to travel throughout the Delta Quadrant exchanging goods with others cultures and civilizations.

    Although powerful, it is meant to be used for merchant and traveling purposes, it is not built for a fight. It is, however, built for speed and maneuverability.
